Our story
Respect for tradition
We are a family-run enterprise based in Porvoo, Finland, founded in 1994. The Makulaku story was first launched with the help of liquorice cooked in our very own kitchen – bagging it was a team effort involving the entire family.
These days our kitchens are slightly bigger. Producing 1.5 million kilos of liquorice every year takes a lot of space and a lot of people. In addition to the family, Makulaku has a staff of 40.
Fresh insights & bold innovation
In addition to traditional liquorice, our strength lies in innovative product development. The most recent example of this is our new product range comprising a choice of organic filled liquorice. It is the result of long-term and meticulous product development and will be launched in Finland in the summer of 2011.
We have also identified a growing market for liquorice outside Finland. International sales account for a significant share of our turnover, with products now sold in 15 different countries, both under our own brand and under our clients’ own brands.
